Dog Training Tips - The "Alpha Dog" Secret

By: Michael Royce

Bernese Mountain Dog If you want to train your dog successfully, You must do one thing correctly, right from the start. You must become the "Alpha Dog".

You see, our pet dogs descended from wild pack animals and instinctually they still want to follow (or challenge to become) the pack leader or “Alpha Dog.” So if you’re going to be successful training up your pooch, you need to be the boss, not him! And once you make it clear to him that there’s just one King of the castle (and it’s you), everything else you do will become easier.

How do you become the Alpha Dog?...I thought you’d never ask. Here are 4 Tips.

1) Greet Your Dog On Your Terms
When you come home, don't immediately drop everything and hug your pooch. Instead, make him go to his sleeping area for a few minutes first. Then, after you've gotten comfortable and he’s waited, call him over and say hello any way you want.

2) Make Him Earn Your Attention
Whether you want to play with him in the yard, or just give him a treat, make your dog earn that attention by first obeying a command. Any simple command will do. When he does obey, pour on a little praise and then give him that attention.

3) Feed Him Last
This is a powerful tip. Make sure everyone else in the household has finished their meal before you even feed Fido. In the wild, a dog will eat only after all the other higher station dogs eat. Your pet will have an instinctual memory of this and recognize it as a clear sign of where he stands in the household.

4) Train The Basic Commands
Spend some time every day teaching your buddy the basic commands – "sit", "down", "stay", "come", etc. This will constantly reinforce in his little doggie brain that you are the one that gives the orders and he’s the one that carries them out.

Wrapping It Up
Consistently do these things and you'll control your dog and not the other way around. Plus, you'll have more fun with your pet because you’ll be more confident about his behavior. And he’ll have more fun with you too because he’ll know exactly where he stands and what’s expected of him. It’s a Win-Win!
